camera for trips
I'm looking for a camera to use on motorcycle trips.
We would like one with a good zoom lens for the
times that we are not on the bike but it has to be fast
when traveling 65 mph as the wife takes pic as we go down the
road. It needs to be one of the compact zooms we do not have
alot of space for a big camera. I have read up on some like the
canon sx230 hs Nikon s9100 s8200 sony cameras.
Thanks Chuck

Take a look at the Olympus SZ-10 or Panasonic DMC ZS-10. Both have good zoom lenses and take great pictures for under $200. The Olympus has an 18 optical zoom and the Panasonic has a 16 optical zoom. My wife has the Olympus and is very pleased with it. The reviews I read give the Panasonic a little higher rating.
I like our old Nikon Coolpix L100 ... 10MP with 15X optical Zoom .. the anti shake works well on the bike and like Jeff said ... dont use zoom on the bike and pics will come out perfect every time.
Also takes pretty darn good video and uses AA batteries with good battery life.

Just a tip....leave camera on landscape setting when moving and Don't use the zoom...any slight movement of the camera while zoomed in will cause far more noticeable blur. When you down load the pictures later, zoom and crop then.
Even when you use a digital when standing still, if you zoom and move the camera at all....blur.
The wife has taken hundreds of picture riding on the back and she has learned never to zoom in....
Just my 2 cents....

Why would you not use the "action" setting when moving on the bike? I can understand not using Zoom, but don't understand using the landscape setting when moving. The only time I use that is when I want both the foreground and background to be in focus.
I'm no pro, so please enlighten me.

In the action setting the shutter speed is high, therefore the aperture number is low and the setting allows more light to come thru the lens which will give more depth of field...the problem i found is it is hard to focus on the move and in the landscape setting it is easier to focus and allows more options for cropping and zooming because the whole picture is in focus.
Like i said, just my 2 cents....
Thanks for all these great tips. I am looking for a camera to mount on the bike (crash bar? saddlebag guard?) or on the rider to take snapshots and video. I will stay tuned. Thanks again!
Jpr8r - I just yesterday got a GoPro Hero. This is an action camera - small and tough designed for use on bikes, cars, bmx, surfing, skydiving, scuba - you name it. It does video and stills and has a good range of mounts - bike, car, helmet, uses clamps, stick-pads, suction cups etc

Obviously not used it myself yet. Might be worthwhile you checking it out - these are very popular with the Adventure Rider crowd.
