I'll give a super-small town at the end of the Garden peninsula in the UP. Divider of Green Bay & Lake Mich. They even have rooms for rent or you can camp. Population of 45 or so. Views of the Summer Island's.
Call Fairport Marina in Fairport, MI. Talk to Dick or Shelly. If you goog it and want to go down (hwy 183) PM me for ph# You do need a reservation as it's a fisherman's hang-out.
I would have to suggest that you spend some time in the Leelanau Peninsula area - Sleeping Bear dunes, Glen lake (all near Traverse City, MI)
I used to spend quite a bit of time of there. Leland (Fishtown) is a nice 2 hour stop.
Us 31 to Ludington. Eat icecream at Joneses Icecream in Baldwin on US 10 east of Ludington. North on 31 to Manistee and take M22 north from there to Travers City and take 31 again north to Harbor Springs and then take M119 to Cross Village. Find your way east to 31 again to the interstate and cross the bridge. It has a pucker factor of 9.5 on a scale of 1 to 10.
Sleeping Bear is a cant miss for sure. On the Wisconsin side there are great views on County Road LS from Sheboygan to Manitowoc. Then stay on Hwy 42 from Manitowoc going north---reverse these if you go south in Wisconsin.
awsome, looks like I"m going to leave at around 4pm July 5th, try to get to wausau, WI by dark, then pace about 300 mile days around the lake and back to st paul.
Anyone know any tricks around chicago, but still end up in Milwaukee for the night ? If not I'll just go around Chicago and sleep in mid WI for the night , possible the Dells
thanks for all the recomendations everyone . I'll hopefully post some pictures along the way when I get back
Instead of going through Chicago look into taking one of two farries that cross Lake Michigan. The SS Badger from Ludington to Manitowoc-the slow boat or the Lake Express from Muskegan to Milwaukee-the faster boat. You can save yourself the pain of going through/around Chicago.

First part of this. You won't regret the ride from Traverse City to Harbor Springs and up to Cross Village, just be aware that there are some Sunday drivers out there every day of the week.
Crossing the Mac isn't that bad though unless it's windy--some construction on the bridge, you will find yourself on the grating for part of crossing. Keep a loose grip on the bars and let the bike wander a little.
My worst experience on the Mackinac Bridge wasn't on the grates: Back in 84 when they were doing sandblasting (like they are now) hit a patch of sandblasting sand just past one of the towers--on a windy day. Still shocked to this day that I didn't lose it when the bars turned to the right (and the edge of the bridge). Fortunately the bike kept going straight and the front tire finally hooked up with pavement and straightened out too. Was only a second or so, but felt like the end of the world! Fortunately they've gotten much better at controlling where the sand goes now due to EPA regulations.
I am looking at making a similar trip later on this summer. I am curious about how your trip goes.
I am considering taking one of the ferries across Lake Michigan. Anybody have a recommendation on which one is better?
