Default Sturgis to Milwaukee

Hey all. I'm leaving Vancouver BC July 31st for 5000 mile ride to Sturgis, on to Milwaukee, Chicago, Kansas City, Denver, Salt Lake and back home. Question to all is any recomendations on route to Milwaukee from Sturgis? Never been East of the rally before and just wondering if I-90 is best bet. Time is kind of an issue. Would like to hear from anyone familiar with this ride. Thanks.

90 is the quickest about 900 miles.

Kinda figured the slab would be quick route. Just wondered if any other road would be prettier/more interesting. Got two days to do it. Got tickets to Brewers/Reds on Tues Aug.7th. Thanks for any and all input.

When you get to LaCrosse, WI you could take hwy 35 down south along the Mississippi to hwy 60 south of Prairie Du Chien. It will add a few miles but the ride along the river is nice and the ride along hwy 60 runs along the Wisconsin River and through some farm country. Once you get closer to Madison you can pickup hwy 14 and then 19 at Mazomanie and come out on 94 north of Madison. It's all good two lane roads and would be a good break from the freeway for you.

Exactly what I was looking for! So say I made Albert Lea MN out of Sturgis day one. What do you think my ETA Milwaukee would be? Already have room booked, game time, 7:10.

LaCrosse down south of Prairie Du Chien to hwy 60 will probably take you 1 1/2 to 2 hours with a stop at one of the lock and dams to see the operation. From hwy 60 to Madison is probably another 1 1/2 hours or a bit more. If you stop to eat or gas up that will add some time. South of the town of DeSoto there is a place called the Great River Roadhouse that has a good lunch. The interstate from LaCrosse over to Tomah and down to Madison is pretty boring with lots of traffic so I don't think this would be a bad option for you. Seeing the River is a nice ride down that way. If you are traveling on a week day traffic around Madison could get a bit nuts at rush hour but not horrible. You'll enjoy Miller Park and the Harley Museum is worthwhile.

Try to get off the Interstate as much as possible. Personally I would rather go more for quality and less for quantity if I was taking an epic trip. The interstate is boring, and the 2 lanes are interesting. The small towns in WI are filled with scenic beauty and quirky ,friendly people. My son lives in Madison, and we could take I39 there, but we always take Hwy 13 to 12 and stop at Sauk-Prairie HD when we go through Sauk City. We do hop on I90/94 to avoid the WI Dells, which is an overcrowded tourist trap in the summer.

Take Haywired's advice. You will be glad you did.
