We are looking at doing a Colorado trip this August. We will be starting from Rapid City, SD and will have about 8 days to make the trip. I would like some suggestions on any good rides, points of interest, lodging, places to eat and maybe any good watering holes to wet our whistles at the end of the day . We are looking to keep the days around 200 to 250 miles and taking in some sights. The only must is that we spend at least 1 night in Estes Park, per the boss.
Well, make your first stop in Estes. Head West over Trail Ridge Rd. into Granby. Then you can head north towards Steamboat Springs. If this is your first trip down here, its about 7-8 hrs from Rapid to Denver. I have relatives in Hill City, so have made the trip a few times. From Steamboat then South to Vail and over to Glenwood Springs. From Glenwood South to Montrose. Lots to see down here. Make sure you're prepared for all kinds of weather, from Summer to Winter in the same day.
Check this link out. Plenty of options from where you're coming from.
We are doing the same type of trip in late august starting in Cheyenne Wy. Then 2,500 miles thru Colorado, Arizona and Utah.
Ditto on the book from Steve Farson, love it!
plan B,tear the map of Colorado in half, throw away the eastern half, then pin the western half on the wall. then throw darts at the map to decide your destination for the day!.
Just watch out for the weather. 80-90s in the valleys, 40s on the passes! afternoon thunderstorms.
Also, drink lots of water!
Its beautiful country. Always a shower in the afternoon. We went to Durango last summer and was very nice. Got warm in the valley. We stayed in Leadville one night and had a very good time. For me I like staying in the smaller towns more than the bigger ones.
