Me and some friends are going to our first IGR on Saturday in Newton Iowa, but are getting into town this Friday around 4:30, but don't plan on going to the track. Any suggestions on trips to take or sites to see late afternoon / evening on Friday? Did anyone go to the IGR last year? If so, how was is?
Live on the west side so not that familiar with the east. Even less familiar with Newton unfortunately. As mustang mentioned, Prairie Meadows (gambling) is available. Not sure your crowd, but there's Adventureland and Bass Pro Shop as well. Otherwise, if you got some time, see something worth seeing like the Bridges of Madison County in Winterset (quite a haul though). There's Saylorville dam as well but I don't know that it's all that worth it (maybe just me since I've been here a while). Saylorville mile long bridge is pretty cool on two wheels though. Water levels are high at the moment so resevoir could be pumping pretty good. Out of towners get a kick out of the Big Barn (local HD dealership) as well.
I have frequented Gerri's Tavern as well for some of the better wings in Des Moines. Place is a hole and deserving of the bad reviews (service can be sketchy but I haven't had an issue). But they are good wings (I think it's $25 for 5 lbs of wings + a pitcher of domestic). Again, not sure of your crowd. I've heard good things about Big Steer in Altoona but I've yet to make it there. It's on the list for this summer, though. Try it out and let me know how it is
Thanks for the info....we'll be coming from council bluffs way. Seen the John Wayne birthplace, but not the bridges of Madison county. Where is the saylorville bridge at? Sounds interesting though....also are thinking about the Iowa races, but not sure yet
Highway 415 around Polk City is the bridge and it's quite scenic afterwards. There's a floating bar along it towards Ankeny/Des Moines that's quite biker friendly as well. Hopefully my masterful map skills come through
How was the rally? Didn't seem like the best weather but hopefully that didn't dampen the festivities.
You know, the weather did stink, but there were times it didnt matter. We did check out the lake which was cool with all the water coming out of the damn, but didnt hit the bar and grill. Although the rally seemed a bit more like a county fair than anything....but having the track there and being able to cruise it was cool.
