Can't speak on 14A, but the ride report in my sig has pics and narrative on 14 towards the end. It takes you through Shell Canyon and up into the Big Horn Mountains. I've heard 14A is great too. I guess it's a nice decision to have to make.
Both cross the Bighorn mountain in much the same territory, but the Western ends are quite different.
I rode both *TO* Sheridan which I gather is the opposite of your intent.
14 runs through a really great canyon just before you get to Shell; 14a runs up the side of the mountain
in some really great switchbacks, but would (I think) be more fun running TO Sheridan on 14a than FROM
Sheridan.
14A will exit into some bleak and very boring territory where 14 through Shell and Greybull exits onto
decent, but not inspiring western plains until you get near Cody. If I had to choose one, it would be 14
through Shell and Greybull.
I suspect this was not in jest and based on experience. They were resurfacing parts of 14 when we went through. It was ground down to base layers of asphalt and heavily textured. Not gravel, but not smooth by a long shot.
Rode 14 before. Nice ride. Did 14A with the snowmobile. My choice for crossing the Big Horns is still 16. Beautiful road. Greybull to Manderson. 31 to Ten Sleep. Nice little back road.
