Talking May-June 2010 Ride on RT 66 and Death Valley

These are from my May 2010 motorcycle ride
along parts of Old 66 and on into Death Valley.

"I left Albuquerque in late May for a 12 day, 2,300
mile motorcycle ride along parts of Old 66 and on
into Death Valley.

The weather was very poor and uncooperative almost
the whole trip, so I aborted the last couple day-long
swing through Joshua Tree and just ran home before
the next storm hit.

In trip sequence..

Arizona Indian Trading Posts.. funky

Holbrook, AZ and Wig Wam Hotel..
RT 66 Icon, spent the night in teepee 3.

Painted Desert National Park.. abuts Petrified Forest

Petrified Forest National Park.. abuts Painted Desert

Winslow, AZ and La Posada Hotel
Extreme winds closed I-40 and knocked out all power
to entire city.

Meteor Crater, AZ (meh....) Extreme winds

Flagstaff, AZ and Lowell Observatory
very cold.. snow

Seligman, AZ..
First section of road to be designated RT 66
(very cold)

Kingman, AZ
Street Rod and Antique Car meet

Oatman, AZ
semi-abandoned mining town, now a tourist destination
famous for its feral donkeys

Death Valley, CA

1) Date's Peak
2) Borax Mine Ruins
3) Stovepipe Wells
4) Scotty's Castle
5) Artists' Drive (pics taken from bike)

Over 100 pics are in this Flickr album.. Enjoy!!

The one posted in the message? That's Artists' Drive in Death Valley.
It really is No-****-Sherlock as steep as it looks.. it must be a 30-40
degree slope

There are more from that area in the album.

Thanks for the pictures, it looks like I'll be moving out west soon and these trips will be far more convenient. On a side note you should look at picking up a DSLR sensor cleaning kit.

The "dirt" on the sensor was actually a partial sensor failure that Canon refused to warranty.
I thought about Photoshopping the defects out, but decided to just let the pics stand as they
were, defects and all.

I did a lot of the same ride in '78. The weather was better. If 115 in Barstow is better.
I'll remember it all until I'm dead.

And boy, Mike, do you live in a great jumping off point for wild west riding.

I agree!!

Within as little as 30 minutes I can be in some pretty spectacular countryside. I seldom ride much around
the city, so the vast majority of the 23,000+ miles I have on the bike was accumulated on road trips.

In June I rode for 14 days through some of the big name parks and I've only begun to scratch the surface.

BTW, Buzzard, I grew up in Alexandria, VA and moved here after I retired..

And there you go. I grew up in north Jersey and moved here when I retired.
Horse country to the east, apple country to the west and Skyline Drive and the BRP to the south. But I love touring the west.

In '78 I got a big shot of adrenalin just a bit north of you. Riding south out of Colorado on 285 I headed east on 64 toward Taos. Half asleep I noticed some railings on both sides of the highway in the middle of nothing but flat desert. I really woke up on the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge at 80 mph. I always had this nightmare of riding/driving across a high bridge that ended all of a sudden... Holy $#!+.

Someday I hope to get out to Chaco Culture NHP to photograph the buildings. What great riding you have.

A single lane road sounds cool for a bike, just have to hope there's no fool driving the wrong way... Never thought I'd want to ride Death Valley, but your pics changed my mind. Great photo album.
