My riding buddy has an 09 SERG 110 that has a lot of top end engine noise. I can best describe it as loud rattle noise in the valve train. IMO it is not a normal sound. He also has an 07 SE springer with a 110B motor and it doesn't sound anything like this. My 07 96" has the normal engine noise but nothing like this.
He's taken it back to his small local dealer and they were not able to lessen the sound. Everyone who hears his engine says it can't be normal so thats why he took it back. Now he's going to take it to another dealer and get their opinion.
I know he'll probably hear the same party line from them. "It's normal and they all sound like that."
Does anyone have similar problems with their 110" motor?
I've noticed some valve clatter recently and am going to take it in for a 5,000 mile fluid change and once over next week. I'm also experiencing tremendous heat coming up off the engine, even after replacing the "cat" headers and adding a SERT. I'm not sure anything more can be done about the heat, it's a shame to pay that much for a bike and have your "ham" baked while on a long ride.

The clatter we're hearing on my friends bike has been there since day one. None of his other bikes including mine sound anything like this.
Has yours been noisy since day one or is it getting worse with time?
Also, how would you rate the heat from you 110 compared to the heat from your previous bikes?

I crossed paths with you on the forum last year. I had a new 08 black Ultra
and we talked back & forth a couple times. The 08 Ultra is gone and I have
replaced it with a 09 SERG. (check out my garage)
I have not noticed any unusual noise from my 110. I also have not noticed
any unusual heat as Mr. Garner writes. I only have 1600 miles on it but we are
heading out Sat. for a nine day ride into Nevada, Montana, etc. I will have a better
feel for the bike when I get back. Nice to see you are still kicking.
I have 3900 mile on my SERG and am the one he's posting about. I have it at the dealer now. The latest word is that Harley has no suggestions. Although they do believe it is a problem. The mechanic told me he is just going to start at the top measuring and inspecting as he works his way down into the engine. Of course his 25 plus years of experience will help to locate the problem. I also have a 110B in an 07 with no noise issues. I’ll let you guys know should he fix it.
I have almost the same noise on my 2008 FXDSE2,,,started a week ago. My Harley Stealer said the noise was probably just the engine breaking in but in the same sentense he said you have another year on your warrantee and he did note that he has a lot of problems with this engine..hmmm. FXDSE2 Jim
Great response from the stealer. So just let it quit somewhere around 1000 mile from home then theyll fix it. I guess when your warranty gets close to the end just buy the extended one and keep on taking in?
Someday someone is going to get sick of it and bring out the lawyers. I paid $31500 for my bike and I expect it to run flawlessly. The lemon law in Washington states if you take it in for the same problem three times you can get another one. Not sure all the issues with bikes?
I bought my wife a new truck today and paid less for it.
No I havent got it back yet. That was just a smart comment to reiterate the previous comments.
This is where were at today.
I stopped in at the dealer and spoke with the mechanic. Turns out the bolt that holds the rear cam shaft gear in place was either over torque or cross threaded at the factory? The bolt had broken but remained in the end of the shaft. This allowed the gear to wobble. They say the noise was amplified toward the top of the engine. They are replacing the cam, gear, bolt and any other related parts. I guess they have the degree and Im just the rider however I think the noise was on both cylinders.
