My buddy has an 08 Screaming Eagle Ultra with a screaming bearing. It sounds to me like it's coming from the cam chest. The bike is mostly stock, has around 22,000 miles, and he flogs it alot. He has never upgraded to the SE compensator like I told him. Not sure if this has caused a bearing to explode or what. This bike has been a major PIA from early on.... He has an extended warranty and keeps taking it to the same numb skulls everytime. Hey! it only cost him $50! but what's the price tag for all the lost riding time?
Tell him to try a new dealer.
If none in the area, then do like me and take matters
in his own hands and do the work/inspections himself.
Saved me a bunch of $$ and especially riding time with my 07.
Well Tim, that is exactly what I would do...Unfortunately, he is not willing to pay for parts since he has the extended warranty. Even though the labor would be free from ME! He has missed out on going to Bike Week in Daytona. And we LIVE in Florida! The $tealer he goes to made him wait 3 days before they picked the bike up (he didn't want to trailer it with MY trailer). Now they have had it for another 3 days, and have not even touched it yet! They just started it up and said, yeah, sounds like a bearing, but not sure which one... I would have NEVER taken it to them. There are 2 other dealers in the area, but he bought it there, so feels obligated to take it there. I was not able to convince him otherwise. So he is sitting at home and I have one less riding buddy....
Clay, I know his exact pain having gone through it 4 times in just the 2 years of the
standard warranty. Sure do love mine and now almost has 30k miles. I just did the IPB
on it about 3k miles ago and added the SE Comp. Not too bad in prices and used the Baker IPB too.
I wish him luck and hope you get that riding buddy back soon...
Thanks Tim. Hopefully he will be back on the road soon. My goal now is to convince him to pay the difference between stock parts and the upgraded ones. You know how warranty will only pay for stock parts. I think he needs the SE compensator, and possibly the SE cam support plate. He might as well upgrade the cams while it is apart too. Just not sure if he will go for it. He's kinda tight on cash right now....like the rest of us!
This screaming bearing noise...is it a sqeeking type noise??? My buddy has a SE Ultra 2009 and he gets a squeeking noise that gets worse as the bike warms up. The dealer is not sure what the noise is but I put an electronic stethescope on the cam cover and it sure sounds like it is coming from in there. Any help appreciated!
No my friend, this is not a "squeaking" sound. If you have ever heard a machine with a blown bearing, you will know the sound I am talking about. It is a very high pitched screaming sound. Very hard to listen to for any length of time. Kind of sounds like non-stop fingernails on a chalk board.
The update on this bike is that an internal bearing grenaded, and he continued to ride to get it home. This caused nearly total engine destruction. His $tealer (and believe me the term is deserved in this case) is flying in a factory rep to access the situation. My friend thinks it's to decide if he gets a new motor, or if they rebuild his. I think it's to decide if there is a way they can deny warranty coverage. I have not told him this. Figured I would wait and see what they lay on him. In this case, his extended warranty "might" be a lifesaver.
Just to update this post. My friend finally has his Screaming Eagle Ultra back! The $tealer had it for THREE MONTHS! He missed the best riding weather we get in Florida. They rebuilt the motor the first time, and it blew up on the test ride! Talk about incompetence! So they spent a month scratching their heads. He finally called Milwaukee and got them involved-again! They could not believe he still did not have his bike back. Needless to say, once they were on the case the motor was again rebuilt. They said the oil pump went bad and took out everything else. So he now has a new crank, bearings, cylinders, pistons, rings, etc. Why they did not just use a crate motor from the get go is beyond me. Anyway, DO NOT take your bike to Gulf Coast Harley in New Port Richey Florida. They are a car dealership acting as a Harley dealer. All they care about is making a sale. After that, good luck.
Oh Man,
Glad he has the bike back. Now he needs to ride the heck out of it to make sure it is built right and ready for him to ride anywhere and anytime.
