He took a shovelhead and added 2009 rear frame and late model tins, tranny and forks.
Yeah he did a nice job of that, attention to details.

I do not want to discourage your intention because it would be an interesting build. But being that you have two complete bikes, it seems a little off to turn them into one bike. I would be more behind this topic if you had the Dyna and only the Shovel motor. Your bike(s) and money, I wish you luck and posts lots of pictures if you go through with it.

Take a good look at the primary/transmission to motor relationship. Your FXR will be closer together with the "short" primary like the touring bikes and the Dyna will have a longer primary like a Softail or Shovel. My guess to make it happen would be to stick with the Dyna tranny and primary and figure out a way to get the Shovel to mate up.

I agree. Also, I think you'd have just as much work (and maybe more headaches) trying to put that shovel motor in a dyna frame as you would just re-doing the FXR.

Ride the dyna, fix the fxr. Enjoy the ride(s).
I have an evo and a shovel, two bike deal. It's a great set up. One of them is bound to run!
Sure there are times riding the evo, with the shovel on the jack, that I wish I was on the shovel instead, but riding is the objective. You got a good setup, imo, atengnr. Good luck with the shovel improvements.

Well, I go back and forth about this. My 82 needs so much stuff. Many of the hex bolts are rusted throughout the bike, the foot controls look like crap, the gas tank (fatbob), has this issue with being a sh** design and allowing water to pool under the console and rotting out the ignition switch; handlebar controls buttons are worn; seat is torn; rear signal wiring was run externally; needs throttle cable and shift cable (for aesthetics); chain guard, side chrome panels and fender struts are rusted. Truthfully, Im not in love with the way the tranny shifts vs. a newer 5 speed. Is it a cool bike? Sure. Handles well. I dont have the time (or money probably) to replace all this stuff needed to make it look nice again. What I do love is the shovel. Its what I bought the bike for mostly. This engine (although I dont know details), was supposedly rebuilt 3000 miles before I bought, and it runs damn near perfect (runs better than my evo). Starts right up, isnt cold blooded, doesnt leak other than out the crankcase vent.

I understand that its not ideal to split bike and motor, but surely someone would like this bike (without motor) and put something else in it (shovel or evo)??

My 82 and 83 FXRs 5 speed shift perfect, no CLUNCK on 1st gear or anything... so that's something else you would have to look into
anyway.... even if you want to keep the shovel and put in in the dyna frame, not sure about the primary compatibility
