FLH engine top end
I am looking to rebuild my 70s FLH engine top end.
I've been told that Vtwin is not recommended and S&S is too expensive!
is there any brand i could search for? a complete kit?
please keep in mind am not a mechanic
thanks
Sure, I would be glad to help you if you want to send me a PM. I don't give advice on Shovel motors on here, just too many "experts" get offended if your ideas don't mesh with theirs, which are mostly incorrect.
sorry you have just been hood winged
post up on this site will get you correct info so everyone has a say and opinion - from owners and good guys that wont steer you wrong - going behind closed doors you leave your self wide open for a hacking
Alls I did was clean the domes & valves,
New head gaskets&did the work myself,
Still runnin strong,
My opinion,
Get some oil&carbon under your nails,
It's good for ya,
(Edit)
Oh by the way,
My advise,
Don't pay nobody to do your own jobs,
You want that machine,
You work on it,

kibblewhite is A USA supplier -- they can be bought at V Twin both valves and guides < cast iron is what the industry is using for quite some time also the blue rubber seal is the deal
S&S is also a USA supplier as well as manley both are pricey- lots of china junk floating around on flea bay - rowe was a big supplier now defunked caution some of the end parts being sold are unfinished or seconds
because you do not know what has been done in the past - valve guides are a size guess in my shop be buy .008 and.010 oversize out side diameter guides bore gauge the heads hole after the old guide is removed, an lathe cut the correct interference fit on the oversize new guide - its not new stuff and if a moron has been in it, and removed the guide cold it tears metal from the head causing an odd guide sizing to be its replacement
kibblewhite valves are black melinite coated stainless and reasonable in pricing
find a machine shop local to you not an autozone - a race machine shop building engines with an old timer not some kid with his hat crooked talking $hit -
the best in gaskets is cometic -MLS for the head gasket - base could be paper but the tin cometic is good as well james - the rocker box -cometic / james are good choices
if you have a picture of the head gasket that was on it both sides can let you know to have them check for flatness of the gasket surface
also check the rocker arm bushings and the end play as it will make it sound like a box of bolts rolling around if they are over spec
we set the new springs we install for a small cam like A 2 so it becomes a drop in as money is always an issue and at a later date -- good luck post up pictures as the guys like to see whats up and how thing can be spotted just from a photo
