i am trying to figure out if I have a good coil or not. This maybe somewhat of an issue of if it ain't broke don't fix it but a few weeks ago while I was trying to diagnose a choppy idle issue, i took an ohm meter to my single fire coil. It was the same coil that came on my bike (1984 FXSB) and it was all black with no branding or markings. The old primary coils (when tested from center post to either top or bottom post) were reading in the 5 ohm range. The old secondary coil was about 28k. The HD manual says the factory coil's primary should be 3.3 - 3.7 and the secondary 16.5k - 19.5k.
It appeared my old coil was out of spec so I ordered a new Blue Streak model MC-IC1X single fire coil (3 ohm) from J&P, partly because it had some good reviews but mainly because it was made in the USA. When it arrived I was immediately concerned because it was all black with no branding or markings. It looked exactally like my old one and a few generics I have seen on other bikes (how do I know it is legit?). The most concerning thing though is that this new coil's primary tested both at 2.5 and the secondary tested at 28.6k... both out of the factory specs.
WTF? Should I send it back or is this normal for an aftermarket coil?
thanks!
I am almost ready to post up post-rebuild pics. I have yet to post on the pic sticky.... stay tuned.
