Salvage actually means jack shi p on Older stuff ........my state doesn’t even issue titles for bikes that old. I have 2 salvage flood bikes now from the 90s that salvage disappeared after a while. Check NICB.....for ***** and giggles. Guys telling you 2-3 grand are kidding themselves....that basket case money now.

Default 77 fxe

I just bought a 77 FXE paid $3000. Little rough but runs good. Chrome needs some work. I don't feel like I stole the bike at $3k but definitely wouldn't have paid more than $4k for it.

I'll have the actual bike at my place on Saturday. Then I can check the vin number and post some pics.

Thanks for all the input.

Correction... those should have been 3 gal bobs thru '84 anyway.. But by then I do believe the 2 into one was gone.

That bike you posted may indeed be a LowRider or as racepres stated, maybe just dressed to look like one. That said it has been customized to a large degree. And yes one of the gapping flaws is the lack of a kicker.

Re: vin numbers

For 1977 HD only made the FX Superglide, FXE Superglides and FXS Low Rider (and before someone jumps on the I am referring to FX series models for 1977 and not HDs total production units of bikes).

FX Superglide start with 2C; FXE Superglide start with 9D and FXS Low Rider start with 2F
I did Not know that they still had an FX [no E] 2C in '77 but the "E" began in 1974 I believe... Mine is still an FX [kick only]2C

Registaration and titles on bikes varies by state it seems. In California, a "salvage title" equates to a "special construction motorcycle". That means when registered it is ispected by DMV and must meet currents DMV regulations. Once it does the bike gets a SPCNMC "blue tag" attached to both the motor and the frame. So a salvaged 1990 FLSTC, once running would now be recogonized and titled as a 2019 SPCNMC. It no longer says HD anywhere on the title.

Re: titles on older bikes not existing on older bikes. My 49 EL came out of West Virginia many, many years ago. It was essentially a basket case. I bought it speicifically because it had a title, the title matched the VIN, and the belly nubers were matching. I also obtained a notorized copy for the bill of sale. My local DMV had an office that specialized in registration of old bikes and cars. Prior to purchasing the bike I asked for any guidlines so that once purchased I would not be facing an uphill battle to get the bike registered. The proces with the correct paperwork made registartion a breeze. Without the documentation it could not have been registered as a 1949 EL.

So in California anyway, a salvage title seriously depreciates the value of the bike. Glad that it works otherwise in Vermont. That alone can save a lot of problems and help preserve old iron.

And out of curiousity, how the the title appear on you slavged bikes?

I hear Vermont is very lenient with paper work, registering a lot of stuff that other states would not. To the point I heard some states may not recognize a Vermont title. You still may have to go thru the entire process in your home state including an inspection. Kind of like getting a pistol permit in Florida.

Just what I have heard, no facts to back it up. Buyer beware and all of that.

Well, the bike arrived this morning.

NOT and FXE as the owner thought but, it is an FXS. The numbers do match engine and frame. I've taken the battery out to give it a good charge so I can find the issue with the starter. Gonna pull the float bowl on the carb to see what it looks like while the battery is charging.

Bike is in relatively good condition considering. Of course, it is puking oil from the breather hose and hasn't even been turned over. LOL

Haven't had a chance to run the vin to make sure of the year but, will do that after I get done with my YARD work.
