Default Solenoid question

I had to take the transmission out of my '77 for a rebuild and now it's time to reassemble everything. This is my first time working on an electric start bike and am unfamiliar with some details. So... I bolted up the solenoid to the case and everything seems to be lining up and working ( manually) as it should with the starter shaft. However, I noticed that there is a gap--apprx 'ly 1/16" between the edge of the solenoid body and the primary surface. Is this normal or did I assemble something off kilter? I don't recall if it was like that when I disassembled it.

I have one more question re: the wiring on the solenoid: I know that the top, longer stud goes to the battery cable and that the lower shorter stud is wired straight to the starter. The 2 wires coming from the relay: the small connector obviously goes to the small middle stud. The other wire , with the large eyelet goes to which post--the battery or the starter post?

That's a very good fit compared to a lot I see, aligns nice and straight too not cocked to one side.

The rubber boot has a flange that seals the solenoid on the outside, along with a foam ring. The boot install from the outside and push into the hole.
