Default Baker 4 speed?

I'm juggling 4 motorcycles in the garage, latest addition is 71 superglide. ODG is wobbly, hard telling what else will be in that can of worms. My DD6 on the Twinkie is awesome! It's been flawless.
on the 71 ive had a 25 front sprocket, pretty sure the drum is a 51. That ratio has been enough OD for solo riding, so im having trouble justifying a 6 speed. But the baker only comes with 23/24?
Open primary so clearance isn't an issue.
Is there any competition?
wheres the best price for a Baker?

Baker controls their pricing...so it will cost about the same anywhere...

Baker has been having issues lately...might want to do some research before ordering...

Since you are running an open primary...you could pick up a used 5 speed...all you would need is a mounting plate...

Use an early one with tapered shaft to use your present clutch...or get a later splined one if you want to upgrade the clutch...

IMO it will shift better than any 4 speed (baker included)...and you won't have to deal with the normal 4 speed mainshaft leak

You can also change to the superior ball and ramp clutch release...or use the 4 speed style if you are hard headed...

depending on the options you chose you could do it for 1/3 the price of a nice 4 speed...and the lower 1st gear and closer ratio will make it more fun to ride...

Rarely hear Technology borrowed from the XL touted as a Breakthrough.....They do work good tho... been working on XL's since the Early '70's.... LOL
Oddly, I have had Zero Problems with the old 4-speed design "Throw out"... but, been "working with them" for a very long time...

They are not really a problem...just harder to find...only used them for one year on the softail type trans you would need for the 4 speed frame...

The release fingers fail without warning...and have been responsible for many "Harley parties " on the side of the road..

Seen it... diagnosed it in fact... Incorrect adjustment... always.. except if Chiwanese parts are used... in which case... ya get exactly what ya pay for...
I did not know that the '86 Softail was the Only 5 speed that would work??? Interesting...
or is that the first one that won't work???

nope... just the only year the 4 speed type clutch release mechanism came on a 5 speed softail trans....

Came on tons of touring bikes and FXRs...Any year evo softail 5 speed trans can be made to work in a 4 speed frame..

^^^ Oh... OK I get it..
and I much Prefer the old 4-speed Clutch to the damnable 85 thru??? I forget... but I hate that tapered shaft abortion vs a real clutch..

That "Can be made to Work" can be a stickler at times as well...
