If it looks lean, then perhaps intake leak as John suggested. Does your bike run like crap when throttling i.e. hesitation, popping?.
It runs surprisingly well. Starts right up, accelerates crisp, shifts well and minimal popping. It does have those straight pipes with no baffles so I attribute the occasional pop to them but nothing bad at all.
I'm going to check for leaks this weekend as well as the float level.
Update...Opened the inspection cover to find that someone replaced the points with a Crane Cams ignition. Three dials to adjust: Spark Advance, Rev Limit and Rear Cylinder....retarded an 1/8 turn on the spark advance and now the bike starts no issue when hot.
the kind of up front info that is real helpful - guessing what's wrong ends in this sucks when you read you never checked anything
I'm sorry if I imposition you in any way. As I stated in my original post that this problem started after I changed the float and I'm new to shovel heads so the two issues are really not related although it seemed so at the start. Why it started hot before the float but did not after, was the mystery so I was looking to see if anyone had experienced this. It was my basic knowledge of engines that made me think timing but again, I don't have the manual (not my bike) so I wasn't even sure where to start.
And in re-reading this thread, no one said to check the points/timing...did that on my own.
But I thank everyone for bearing with me on my learning curve and appreciate the point in the right direction and where to start looking.

I message board thing should exist - explaining what the correct way to engage about an issue
that was really not directed at you it was general statement - and I should have said that - as it is all the time a lack of info about what was done before this happened - on and on and on

I think I did clearly state the problem (changed the float and then was hard starting when hot). At that time nothing else was changed and that's why I was looking to see if any one else had encountered this issue. Many including yourself came up with good ideas for me to check and when those didn't t work I looked further into other areas. But I wasn't going to start tearing into other parts of the bike that at the time seemed unrelated.
So so am I still missing "the correct way to engage about an issue? Isn't that part of the purpose of these boards? Have an odd problem and looking to see if any one else has experienced it?
