Default Wiring starter solenoid backwards?

Is it possible to mix up the 4g wire terminals on the solenoid? something funny happened when I wired up my solenoid, after a few minutes I touched the solenoid (power from start button disconnected) and it was HOT HOT HOT to the touch, it also seems as I've unfortunately smoked my battery (no amperage anymore & tender is reading bad battery :/) -- what the fack did I just do?

Quite honestly, I just threw it together hav no idea the terminals had any specific wiring. I thought of it as a regular solenoid with nothing more than a electromagnetic plunger type deal that lifts a solid conductor bar to complete the circuit, with the coil powered by 12v from the relay. After pulling my hair out, creating this thread in the middle of stressing over what I had just done, I did a quick search and sure enough found that the short stud goes to the starter.

'Why?' I asked
I pulled the solenoid apart and see that there's a solid copper wire that runs from the starter terminal into the coil along with the 12v wire from the relay, what the hell is this copper wire doing in this style design solenoid?
I only care because I like to know how things work

Funny thing too, when I grabbed the solenoid from the bench for installation I noticed one stud was longer than the other and thought "hmmm, why is one stud shorter than the other" Lol... I learned my lesson.

Short stud = starter
long = battery

That I will never forget after this $250 mistake.

Aye, what ya'll think of Yuasa batteries? I ended up ordering one of them for $140 from J&P along with a new ACCEL solenoid. (I hear good talk about ACCEL) it was either a $30 solenoid or a $70 solenoid, the difference in price must mean something.

Luckily... I still have an Indy... so... No J&P nor the other purveyors of Chiwanese "troubles"
no Accel for me for the last decade at least... Yuasa can be OK..But...if it says "made in Taiwan" on the battery... may last a day of rough service use...
if it says "made in Japan" on it... Maybe a Week!! If it says "made in USA" on it... look for a solid year of rough [ab]use...

and Cycle Electric is good ****!!!!
