Default About chains: final drive

I've been following another thread here about final drive chains and didn't want to highjack the thread.
I've got (for all intents/purposes) a stock '79 FXEF. I understand that some modified bikes have very close tolerance in this area, am i correct in believing that my stock bike won't have a problem if i put on an O-ring chain? When do i need to be concerned about clearance in this area?

o ring chains are fine. An X-ring chain will not fit.

Buddy with a custom 76 FLH. He tried an o-ring chain and it would not work. I have a stock 78 1/2 FXE and an o-ring chain will not fit.

Problem may occur where the 0-ring meets the back of the inner primary and clearance issues where it meets the starter shaft housing.

Is there a way to check the clearance for an O-ring chain without tearing the bike apart?

You could wrap some silly putty around the chain and feed it around the front sprocket. It should self clearance and give you an idea of how much room there is. Obviously, if it's close, you may have to find something else that's more precise.

Also, if someone is considering this for a different model, the 65-69 aluminum primaries were different and should be evaluated separately from 70-84 specs.

I have run an o-ring chain on a 1984 4 speed forever....I don't remember having any clearance problems...but I would have just whipped out the die grinder, and made clearance if there was...
