Hey guys,
im new to this forum and beating my head against the wall! I put the clutch in, put it 1st, and it surges forward.... then stops, then surges forward again with a metallic sound. The steel clutch plates had a bit of mushrooming on them, so I cleaned them up. That didn’t fix the problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
My Shovel FLHTC [gone now] only did that when the clutch frictions were oil contaminated..Buy new frictions, [make sure steels are dead flat] or clean what you have with something like Mineral spirits... dry, and Scuff on fairly smooth concrete floor...assemble, Adjust [by the book] and enjoy!!
Oh better get a look at the throw out bearing also... as that can cause what I believe you are describing also!!

Doss the motor die as well? I agree with Racepres - if you are changing fluid (or can lean far enough to the left side to save some oil), pull the right side cover and check the throwout bearing and it's operation. It may waste a gasket and fluid but you know if if trouble is on that side.
