Anybody have any comments on s+s 93 in. Shovel crate motor? One that has been used for touring not just bar hopping. Thinking of going that route with a baker 6 speed. Any of you guys running that setup with higher miles?
Have a buddy with the S&S Pan version in a 93 ci. He's had zero problems. Also running a Baker transmission, pricey but bulletproof. Zero issues with that as well.
Those 93 crate motors come HiPo or regular, you want to ride it skip the HiPo version. I have one it's hell on the starter system other than the kicker .I run 240lbs and can stand on the kick pedal . Crazy fun when it's running but it's not my daily rider anymore now.
I had the 93 hi output in my shovel. I sold it this past spring just to rebuild the original engine. It was a great runner and reliable. My bike is kick only. It took me a while to get a method down, but it wasn't too bad. It was my daily rider for a long time.
mine i took and dropped the compression down to 7 to 1 and i run a tall gear 25to 52 it works real good on the interstates --it aint light to light bur more like state to state --it has a big top end and i get real good mph out of it top end is a little more than s&s list in the build information which is 146 mph and change -if you have that in a stock hd frame you got to watch out for breaks in the rear section of ti that motor pulls real hard and the down tubes break down low where the tubes are welded into the cast steel just above the bottom curve about 5 or 6 inches ----i built my engine and one other in a gen set of cases and they both are still running after 40 years --i built them back in 1977 and they was cheap compaired to today the side winder kit was around 475 if i remember corretly-i also built a 92 inch s&s in 74 it was 92 inches with stock cylinders and no bore--that was a nasty sounding engine when you started it cold in the morning w2ith thre loose pistons which were forged clearance was 10 thousands but they grew alot when they got hot
\
I have been riding my s&s engine now for close to 45 years--i did pull the engin down and do a rebuild in 1989 before i closed my shop down to mave to nevada --i did a crank pin both big end and small end on the rods --new valves seats and lifters and a 20 thousands bore ing job on it for a cost of 213.00 usd --it has been to mexicio city from vero beach fla and back in july and part of aug in 1974plus all over the nation--it is in semi retirement now since i got a v-rod a 2003 which is the finest harley i have own--very little maintance --tires and oil changes about all it needed covered
I dropped the compression down on mine so it runs any kind of gas you put in it --i dont run it hard so the 10 to 1 compression was dropped to 7 to 1 so it will live longer
