Thanks guys. Now that the paint is done, I will install the fenders, etc., and then turn my attention to the motor. I hope to do as much myself as I can. Cylinder machining and crank rebuilding is above my skill set though. The heads were done by the previous owner, so maybe just a cleanup is all that is needed.

When I was researching the hinge and latch I noticed most of them came with flange-head hex bolts. That turned out to be correct, so I bought a few NOS bolts and swapped them out. I think the shop the previous owner used only carried grade 8 bolts in their bins, because the two bolts that attach the headlight eyebrow were also grade 8 and the parts book says they are grade 5.

Dont forget the lanyard thats supposed to go through the hole in the plastic seat base. Not sure how you'll attach it with the seat upholstery on.

Yes, I have that somewhere. The seat end is attached by a metal bar with a hole in the middle that slips in and then slides across the hole in the seat. Hard to explain w/o pictures, but when I find it I'll post.

Meanwhile, on my old FXR I didn't use this heat shield. I forgot to take a before picture, but today I sanded and polished it to prep for chrome. The local shop recommended a plater that I will bring it to. You can see where I sanded thru the original plating, but that shouldn't be a problem.

.
The back side shows what the coating looked like before I cleaned it up. I remember using some kind of DIY ceramic coating that didn't last on the pipes, so that's probably what was on it.

Are you looking for OEM or something to fill the need?

A couple of used OEM parts recently sold on ebay, some may come along.

OEM Battery Hold Down

OEM Battery Hold Down

Here's something that a few vendors are selling. It's black powdercoat, you'd have to add a bolt and nut, and it's pricey for what it is:

I can picture it, that makes sense, easier to install.

The paint has cured on everything but the tank, so I could wax them. Being an old guy, I used Meguire's Gold Carnuba wax. A friend of mine details cars and offered to use ceramic, but I like the look and feel of good old fashioned wax.

With a couple coats of wax, I was finally able to install the original commemorative emblem on the front fender. First trace and cut out some 3M foam tape, and seal the middle with rtv just so water can't collect.

Then pop it on and secure with the nut. I was surprised it didn't follow the contours better, the tops of the wings don't touch the fender. Did I do something wrong?

The side panels are waxed and on the bike for safe keeping.

One of my parts books said both side panels are secured by quarter-turn pins, so I bought a set of pins and clips, even though the bike came to me with allen screws on the left side. One of the pins turned out to be too short to reach the clip on the left side so it seems the screws are correct. The later parts book does say to use screws on late 82 bikes on the left side.

The rear fender is waxed, but I'll need a helper to install it without scratching it all up.
