Compare the two look at the grain quality between them, it's simpler & cheaper to cast the larger less intricate shaped part. That's the driving force behind most updated revisions, less $$ to make.
^^^ The forks came from a 96 Dyna, and are the -79E version. Now they fit in mine which calls for -79B. You can see how much longer the newer case is by the shaft.
This is what I did to the shift fork so it would fit, along with some relief on the case:
The shift forks came with their updated drum, but I decided to keep the original one in the trans. Both looked to have about the same wear. It's hard to get an exact measurement here, but it appears to be right, so I didn't make any adjustments.
The end play was excessive, measuring .010" with the spec being .001-.004". Curiously the new drum was worse.
The outer shim is the thinnest available. I'll have to go to the Harley dealer to get a thicker one, because NAPA doesn't have generic shims to match. There's a couple other things I'll pick up while I am there.
