Default Starter noise

Recently on my 77 FXE when I hit the start button I get a spinning / grinding noise. I release the button for a second and when I hit it again, no noise and bike starts right up. From looking around on the old interwebs most posts are saying that this is most likely a bad starter clutch or bendix and will get progressively worse. Does this sound correct? I appreciate everyone on here and your helpful tips and suggestions. You have helped me get my dads old bike running pretty well so far and enjoy the process of getting it there.

I had the same problem, it’s common. I thought it was the bendix spring or solenoid.
Pulled off the primary and found the the fork from the solenoid was not catching the starter sprocket/shaft. Bent it back onto place and it;s working now.

I know I’m using a lot of bad terminology and I haven’t been in ther primary since last year so I’m trying to remember how all the parts work. Any, it was a bent fork thingy.

Now I don’t know why it was not catching, why it got bent out of shape in the first place, but it’s fixed now and this year I’ll find out if I fixed it for good.
