Wow, that is ugly. Good luck whichever path you choose. I have had luck in the past welding a nut or bolt to the mangled piece but on much smaller problems.

Thanks for all the tips. I just had a look at my buddy’s Evo in his shop. He was showing me the guts of it all. The sleeve here adds a whole new element, since it’s mated to the splines and won’t come off even after the head of the nut is cut off. I just can’t see how I’ll possibly cut enough of it away to get them both off without mangling that shaft, especially the sleeve which is hardened steel. I think I may be on the side of welding a nut to it now.

Get a 4 inch side grinder and cut the brass washer away. If you damage the compensator bell, so be it. I see you welding on a nut and then tearing it up due to the same brass washer locking stuff up. Get rid of the brass, weld your nut, apply some heat and wreak on it Counter clockwise. I am still thinking you could cut the compensator bell apart / away, relieving the brass washer lock and also providing more access for more heat on the long compensator nut. Good luck. I have faith in you getting it apart with an intact shaft. You may be out the compensator; you are already out the Compensator nut.

The bell - the slider and gearing then the spline spud comes off when the nut is removed - the flywheel shaft and the threaded the nut was on is left

Thanks. No worries about losing the compensator. I’m going belt anyway. One last question before I go cutting into the bell tomorrow… once that’s done, will it eliminate being able to wedge the primary sprockets to free the nut?

The sprocket will be not be removed, it will still have the chain connecting it to the other sprocket. Are you going to weld a new nut on or just put a big pipe wrench on your buggered head? I think being able to heat the length of the threaded portion of the nut will pay dividends. It is either loaded with Red Loctite or something even stronger or rusted.

Good point. You can still wedge the sprocket, but it won't stop the flywheel shaft from turning ( I think ).

That’s what I was worried about. Seems there are a couple differing stances here. I really don’t wanna lose that part of the equation, but if it’s what must be done, I guess that’s that.
