Ah yes the dreaded boogered up Shovelhead exhaust flange bolt hole.
1984 FXSB with oem heads. Running a Thunderheader that I have shimmed as best as I can at the rear mount to keep zero stress at the heads.
Both heads were helicoiled by a PO and it lasted quite a while. The front one is still holding up just fine.
I recently have had issues with the rear pipe bolt backing out and falling out. The helicoil there was boogered up and loose.
Earlier this summer I re-installed another helicoil (5/16-18). It now is starting to back out. It loosens up when the engine is hot.
I am taking a peak at Time Serts. I see they offer what's called a "Big Sert" to use in holes which previously had a failed Helicoil.
Has anyone had experience with these?
Being a Thunderheader, I can't really use two studs but I think I could manage to use a stud on the rear pipe and continue to use the bolt on the front pipe. Thoughts on that? I know it is preferred to use studs instead of bolts here.

"Big sert" or.. go to Fastenall... get thick wall threaded insert...If Needed.. the thinwall is much thicker than a Helicoil..
Then use a Stud, with nut.. Not a Bolt
Reason to go with Fastenall is the threads are Standard... Not some Proprietary stuff...
ie 3/8 OD with 5/16 ID... could even go Fine threaded ..which would be Better yet for Stud... not necessarily on the OD of Insert into aluminum!!

I've not had problems with my Shovel pipes ... I had a buddy who welded up a boss for an additional bolt and reworked the flange on his ... It was a pretty slick repair
