Default Exhaust stud broke

Went for a long ride last weekend and when I got home the front exhaust stud/bolt was gone and there is a chunk of metal missing from the head. It looks like if I try to re-tap the threads I could do more damage to the head. The bike is '79 FLH. The parts book shows 5/16-18 bolt but mine had a stud, I'm pretty sure

I was planning to go through the top end over the winter since it needs valve seals but go sidetracked rebuilding the old race bike.

What's the best repair for this? Weld it all up and redrill and tap?

I also have a chunk missing from the intake spigot on the rear head where the PO installed the intake with a crowbar from the looks of it.

Sure pull the heads and repair both - you need a Harley shop a welder is a welder but a local HD shop will know what it should look like and directions of the weld to look like when done

Thanks John, that's what I had thought would be the only option.

Is this a common problem? Should I re-work both exhausts studs?

If the repairs are done in a workman like manner - then it works for a long time not being abused

dont 1/2 *** anything fix it once and do it right

When you reinstall the exhaust pipes, make sure they are shimmed correctly and don't pull on or twist the stud.
