I'm looking at a 1982 FXB, which I understand is the LowRider Sturgis model, but all the pics and videos I've seen have the bike with a belt drive. The bike I'm looking at has a chain drive. Did the 82 FXB ever have a version that was chain drive? Also, the ignition key is on the gas tank dashboard and not on the left side near the oil tank that I've seen in most pics. Is the bike I'm looking at an FXB?
If it is a Sturgis it was belt drive,a bike that old may have been converted to chain even early on as those early belts weren't near as reliable as today's.
The gas tank and other bits may have been swapped out as well, heck it could be an FXB motor in another frame who knows.
80 - 82 FXB had dual belt, that is what made them unique. 1980 only 1470 made, don't know how many survivors. The ignition key was on the right side just below the seat. Sadly they also had factory upgrade parts that were chrome, when the original parts are more desirable.
If you're looking at a drive chain, my guess would be they had shell issues and couldn't find the belt drive shell or were just too smart and converted it to a chain. Many also change the seats, sissy bar, and tool pouch (like gold now). My belt drive shell is pretty rough and I couldn't find a machinist willing to attempt to turn it. Fortunately, through the wonders of modern technology, I found one of the last remaining NOS belt clutch shells right parts# for the 1980 FXB.
Sound like you have a rider.
Pics would be good.
I have a stock 82 Sturgis. It is dual belt, ignition key on the left. The belt guard is black and does not have the orange text on it, probably cause it clashes with the gold/brown paint scheme. There was never a Sturgis with chain drive. I would check the VIN and make sure the bike/motor have matching numbers.
Appreciate all the responses. Did some more checking on the VIN. Originally thought 1HD1BD which would have been FXB Sturgis. Upon further reveiw, looks like 1HD1BC which would be and FXS Super Glide, which was chain drive.

I always thought the FXS was the Low Rider and the FXE the Super Glide
