Im running one on my 76 FXE and its without issues. Crisp response at partial or full throttle.
My engine is a 1978 1/2 80 rebuilt with S&S 84 crank assembly twenty over forged S&S pistons , S&S 450S cam.
Back in day as they say I had the stock Keihen on my 79 and then an SU eliminator. Im really happy with the S&S, first S&S carb for me.

Cheap???? S&S B seems ready made for Shovelhead.. Unless yer a Throttle Jockey...they work excellent..
Note that Any Suitable carb, will give the Same Performance, If Tuned... Stock Harley... at the Dragstrip...(Manners Not a Factor), stock ka-sneeze, bendix, CV, S&S...all run exactly the Same E.T., and MPH...
LOL
What is an "Older Bike" these days??? If it has a Spigot Intake...it is Very difficult to Beat the CV...Very difficult indeed!!!
But, Since we in "Shovelhead" section... S&S E is just Fine...B is as at least as Good, if, ya don't mind beating up yer right Knee.. Beyond S&S ...we are Talking about probably the Most Prolific of Carburetor Availability... So Many suitable Shovelhead/Ironhead Carbs that I'm Not sure I can list them all off the top of my Head!!
But, I'm Old!!!!! And I shoot for Manners... There are Certainly more Mannerly Carbs than the S&S... The Butterfly S.E. being as Close to a CV, as I have Used. With the QwikSilver II a very close Second, and Easier to Tune!!!! Beyond all that...It is very difficult indeed to Better a good ole Bendix!!!! Without Aftermarket Enhancements Please!!
