The conversation involving me and a timing plug was about stripped threads in the case unless I am being confused with someone else. I ordered a clear plastic plug for checking the timing with my timing light.

Is it my imagination or have you been MIA for a bit ?

Been traveling, taking a month or so wandering across the country from Cali. In West Virginia currently heading to Jersey then Baltimore, haven’t figured where after that yet.

I’ve tried several variations of those plugs, still have a couple new ones, never had a bit of luck with any the trash bags and paper towels always come out,

Default Follow up

As a follow up to this thread.
I had a clear plastic plug for timing that I had not used. I decided to try it this weekend and time the shovel with a light.
Worked as advertised. Very easy to see the mark even with the oil on the inside of the plug.
Turned out my timing by static was off by about 6-8 degrees. Made a difference in performance.
I will be using on everything from now on.

you have gear to gear issues in movement - listen for pinging it will do more damage then the 6 or 8 degrees

Or...Method is Suspect...
Anyone who ever checked my work from our Shop. Found the Timing where I said it was! Rarely Dead on the Mark..again...No Rubber Stamp....
Align the Mark in the center of the window...have 5 different people look at it... how many different answers??? Do the same 5 degrees off (either way) answers much more varied!!!
Better yet...Tune on a Dyno..tell us where you end up!!! Note..if you bother with Dyno...Mark yer backing plate and Points gap if points...just a Suggestion, for Your Engine ...

Keep in mind there will always be some difference between checking the timing with it not advanced and running full advance.
I do have the quality advance that JZ recommends.
