My buddy is swapping out his original shovelhead motor on his 80 FLH to a new S&S motor. We are in NC and I warned him that he better get the title changed. He laughed and said " not worried".
I've heard too many stories about cops checking matching numbers and the ensuing tow followed by impoundment. I really don't care if his own ignorance gets him in trouble but I don't want to be at a rally or on the road with him should he have a problem.
What else can I say to my buddy?
If this really Was a Problem...How would S&S sell so Damn Many???
The Engine has Not been titled since 1970!!! Tho Many have Illegally done just that...They are the ones loosing their Ride!!
I have heard Horror stories about Commiefornia...But... No Way on this Earth I am ever going There. Their "leaders" have many times proclaimed that they do Not need to Heed Federal Laws!!!
I really doubt the average cop is going to know to start looking at the engine number and the difference when the Vin matches on the frame as does the reg and insurance.
A cop that rides will know what S&S is, now I have been stopped by a ignorant cop once, it was a call ahead from the sheriff to the city cops.
Sheriff didn’t like my drag pipes on the Shovel, NYS abbreviations Harley Davidson as HA/DA, he read off the registration as Honda, wanted to me to confirm what year it was, and was really starting to give me ****, it was midnight and I just got out of second shift at the paper mill, they were mostly looking for DWI and pipes where the justification.
He got another radio call and I was plainly sober, had to let me go
^^ Any more than the Cops have any reason to check that yer pickup motor matches the VIN!!!
The Engine is only wanting to Match the VIN for Collectors/restorers!!!

30 yrs ago that was a worry, today the average cop wouldn't have a clue much less care about it. Long as he has the MSO on the engine, leave it alone. Playing the blue tag game comes with it's own set of issues like getting a special construction title and the related insurance headaches and dropped value. Titles off the frames anyway on those year. S&S been in mine 10 years now I didn't do the dance either,
