Default Case splitting tool question

This is a question for the guys who do it regularly that may have this tool. I have the Jim's case splitting and flywheel press tool, part # is 1047-TP. It says plainly on the instructions that is what it is used for with exception to twin cam B motors. I was on a facebook group and you know how information and questions work there. Sometimes bad advice from guys who think they know everything and willing to tell you all the stuff you don't really need to do for a simple rebuild. So a fellow mentioned the tool was only for pressing out the flywheel and not splitting the cases, but it literally says on the instructions that is what it is for (screenshot below). The other advice I received from the same individual was not to use the tool without a hard cap (Jim's 1048) to go over the sprocket shaft cap, which looking at it and how the splitter works does make sense to avoid screwing up the shaft and threads, except in my mind it seems like tool steel on the shaft, being pressed on by another piece of tool steel, seems like it still could mar the threads and shaft.. I can't find the cap anywhere in stock and to me not worth paying 80 bucks for a one time use tool (or at least hopefully). I have a lathe and can take measurements so...

Question 1 - Does the Jim's tool work to both split the case and press the flywheel out in to the cam chest side (as advertised)
Question 2 - Does the hard cap need to be steel, or hardened, or would aluminun or something soft like aluminum be fine for a "hard" cap for the threaded press shaft to push against since the idea is for it not to mar threads or the shaft?

The motor in question is from a 82 FLH so it definitely falls under the umbrella of usage for this tool. I have it down to the bare casesbut just not been able to find a living local or regional guy willing to work on shovelhead cases. I have a 20 ton press but just acquired recently so with limited experience I'm not too willing to risk going hog wild with that when I already have a tool made specific for the job, so long as it works as advertised.

Thanks to anyone who can offer tips and advice.

It pushes the wheels out of the races, case coming apart is a side effect of that. Expensive if you don't use regular. Made mine decades ago from an odd ball puller I had, pans, shovel and evo's. I don't play with anything newer.

I really appreciate the look at your puller there and the info. I've been traveling all week so not able to eyeball the JIm's tool I have. It's been stored in the bottom of my toolbox awaiting the process so working a fair amount off memory and assumption. I'll probably be circling back with a few questions but between the service manual and some videos off pacific Mikes Ytube channel I'll probably be able to navigate forward!

Thanks sir!
