Default Turn signal

Bike is a stock 1976 FLH. Problem is the left turn signal. When you press the button causes the dash lights to flutter and circuit breaker pops. All other handlebar functions work as they should. I am not very good with electrical problems , could it be the button switch is bad or the socket on the dash? Took hand controls apart, no pinched wires. Changed flasher. Gotta love these old machines, one day everything works fine, next day some little issue pops up. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I had one of the metal contacts on the back of the button ground out on the handlebar. I only noticed it after I rotated the switch housing to move the lever up or down.

I had a similar problem years ago. Making a right hand turn with the turn signal on bike would die. Get to the side of the road, circuit breaker would reset and off I’d go. Got her home and got the front wheel off the ground. Wire had exposed section with no insulation. When turning right with signal on, wire would ground against frame and trip the breaker. In other words, as Magnum said, check your wiring.

Might seem weird but open all four turn signals, remove the bulbs and clean them off. The sockets get corroded or rusted and strange things can happen like blinking, not blinking, more than one blinking etc. I like a plumbing wire brush to clean it all up, than dielectric grease to keep it clean. I have fixed more than one set of wonky turn signals this way.

That all said and recommended, sounds like something is grounding causing the breaker to pop. good luck.

Thanks Architect, I removed the bulbs, trying to isolate the problem, I am trying to use a multi meter, learning about ohms, resistance , who said an old dog can’t learn tricks! I love this old machine but she can be temperamental!

If the circuit breaker trips when you press the turn signal button, there is a short to ground somewhere between the turn signal switch and the bulb.

A tripped breaker is not caused by a bad ground.
