Hello all,
I have a 1975 FLH, only just got the bike running and it has some shifting issues I would like some assistance with please. It is hard to select 1st gear. It feels like the shift drum isn’t spinning quite far enough to fully engage the gear without the dogs clashing before it finally goes into gear.
Ok thy this - let the clutch out when in neutral then pull it in a shift down almost at the same time - if it clunks and goes in the clutch is dragging
the factory book is your friend in some of this - if it does not work as suggested then the trans may have to come out as the shift shaft is floating when your shifting or the end play is too great on the cluster gear from thrust washer wear or the shift fork of worn down or all the above together
you can if you able to buy some of the tools to do this but a shop could be cheaper in the end

Thank you for the advice Johnjzjz, looks like the box needs to come out, I’ve adjusted the clutch and there is definitely no drag, feels like the shift drum doesn’t spin far enough around to complete full dog gear engagement.

Check for physical interference of linkage and of course Lever.. not running, rock the bike and shift by hand.. up to 4th and back down.. If it won't shift Down from any gear...the ratchet mechanism is suspect...only first??? Top Off...
