Default 1976 fxe starter/battery tray bracket support

I bought what I thought was an advertised ‘76 fxe starter set up from a member a couple years back. Been busy lol and finally working on the bike. I don’t believe the starter is correct for my bike. The bracket off the tranny goes over the top starter support bolt. However the starter is out to the point the tranny bolts aren’t long enough to slip the bracket over. Help please.

My 1981 bracket looks the same also. I went out to the garage and measured my starter and it is about 5 1/8" long not counting the protrusion in the center of the end cap. The end of my starter looks like the one above. The end of your starter is different FWIW.

The starter i bought is a prestolite i believe. I’m thinking I need a hitachi starter? That would be shorter and most likely allow the bracket support to bolt up?

Yup that had the Hitachi in the FX models if the memory isn't screwing with me. I've played all kinda games getting that bracket work on a lot of machines, nothing aftermarket is bolt up.

Guess i search for a hitachi starter. The starter i bought is 8 3/8” long. The measurement from where it would bolt to the inner primary to my battery box bracket is 7 3/4”. This explains the gap Freon the bracket to sitting tight against the kicker cover. I assume I’m better off getting an oem hitachi even if it needs a rebuild versus CHINA??

Found a complete outer/inner primary all internals including electric start parts. Anyone know if ‘76 fxe and ‘81 fxef are interchangeable?
