Hmmmm, I don't think I agree with a blanket statement that electronic ignitions don't require an advance. My Shovel is running a TwinTec electronic ignition and also has a mechanical advance. Been running it for 15+ years flawlessly like your 2000i.
The VT-I Ignition system does not “adjust” timing, it fires the ignition based on the OEM mechanical advance mechanism (not included – supplied by the customer)

You don't have to agree, but if you want to run an ignition system that requires a mechanical advance, then go for it.. Yes, there are a few Ignition systems out there. Compu Fire as well. But they're pretty archaic..
Dan specified a 2000i so, no centrifugal advance..
Me personally, I like the remote ignition module with just a hall effect cam position sensor in the nose cone..
To each they're own..
And yes, the 2000i is pretty much set it once and worry free..
No need to lube worm or rusted weights or replace week springs because they're worn and now your getting detonation because the springs are so week that you're getting to much advance under load.. Not to mention a pita to time..
Edited: actually, I even ran a remote Screaming Eagle programmable Ignition module with the same hall effect cps made by Standard Motor Products.. That's 77 FXE ran unbelievably well..

And...O.E. take offs are readily available.. if you find it lacking..put a sportster Box on O.E. and go... at least as good as any "add-on" and IMO, superior to Chiwanese Anything..for same or less Money!!
Update: kill switch is the culprit. Had to wiggle it around to get it to work. Any words of wisdom for buying another or just go to Jo cycles for China junk
With the scarceness of quality condensers available these days, I would install an electronic ignition system (if it were my bike).
Funny you mention that, went through 2 before dropping a Dyna 2000i in the one on the lift currently and you have to watch online sales like a hawk. Counterfeit Blue Streak stuff all over Amazon & ebay. Sent 2 two points & cond. sets back for that the last 6 months.

Lemme Know how soldering that POS works out!!!
Man do I Miss the old Swap Meets, where one could pick up "Take off" wiring.
racepres surprisingly the soldering was pretty easy. I zip tied the switch block to the handlebars to keep it from moving. Unsoldered the wires put in new switch and done. Back to fighting the clutch.
