Default Compensator nut

Bike is a stock 1976 FLH, changing some sprockets and replacing seals. My question is when the nut , 40392-70 is torqued down is the “Retainer cover assembly” able to spin. Right now the nut is frozen in the retainer. I assume from the diagram in the parts catalog that it should come out. Everything is apart but it seems I will need a new compensator as the nut is stuck. Maybe a press will help with out crushing things.

If what I read is you have the compensator off, yes the OEM compensator retaining bolt is free to pull away from the other parts. If it spins by hand, it should come out.

FYI: Pictures are worth a thousand words.

Thanks, that’s what I thought, the compensator came off, the spacer, rotor, stator all came off. It’s the nut that is frozen in the spring retainer.

Nut came out a fraction but froze.
Nut came out a fraction but froze.

What have you got going on there at the arrow? Looks like epoxy, or ?? corrosion?

Question: Why would you epoxy that in? Any reason?

Probably red permanent grad loctite. Someone got a little sloppy putting it together last time..

Put some heat on it with a mapgas torch. Keep it off the springs.
