Default Big oil leak

Looking for a little advice. I have a 77 FLH that can puke about a half quart or more out the breather tube on startup. The case pressure seams a little high also. I've heard use a 60wt oil, change the breather gear, route the breather in to the oil tank...etc. Has anyone had or seen this problem? I can't even find the correct routing for the breather hose. It is currently discharging right in front of my rear tire. (thatis a little un-nerving) Can it be routed higher in the frame? I need a lttle education here. Everyone around me knows nothing about Shovels.

I have a 74 shovelhead that used to leak out the breather at start up. I found that my oil pump ball was not seating very well and oil was flowing back into the engine. My solution was to check the spring and ball, check the seat and clean out any residue from the pump. It will occasionally leak from the breather if it is not cranked for a period of time. I use Valvoline 60W racing oil in the summer and 50W in the summer.

Thanks for all the help. I was just about to tear into it and re-seat the check valve ball when I decided to try an oil change. Someone had suggested a 60wt oil. What the heck, I tried everything else. I never thought it could be that easy. The leak and pukeing has ended. Cross your fingers, this seams to have solved or at least slowed my problems. Thanks to all who posted.

First off when they sit for a extended period of time (like winter) it is not un common
for them to cough oil out of the breather, now if yours is doing it all the time your breather gear may not be timmed correctly, also check your oil line routing to be sure the lines are routed corectly. As far as the breather hose being in front of the tire you can move it to another location and install a breather element on it then take a wire tie and latch it to the frame. When it comes to running heavy oil that was what we did pre cone engines and you should not need it with yours unless you have internal
problems.Good Luck !

In South Florida I've never run anything except 60 or 70 wt oil in my Shovels and panhead. The early Shovels were made to run straight grade oil and with the high temperatures in Florida, HD105 (60wt) was recommended. The breather hose was connected to the rear chain oiler that was why it was routed over the rear chain. Later they routed it to the aircleaner which usually caused a mess. The first thing we did with a new bike was route it back to the chain and to hell with the EPA.

OK heres a secret. Your problem is not uncommon with shovels. It is your check valve seat. The check valve closes when your oil presure drops to prevent oil from entering the engine. On top of the O-Pump is a plug, the lower one in the middle. There is a spring and a ball, get the ball out with a magnet stick. Buy two new *****. Make sure the seat is clean with a Q-tip. Put one ball in and carefully set a 1/4 inch punch down on it and give the punch and good rap with a hammer. Than take that ball out and throw it away and put the other NEW ball in and put it back together and it will be reseated. Good Luck. Happy Trails
