Default 80" battery

I just bought a 1980 80" FLH in need of some minor repair. The first thing on my list is a battery I guess. It came with a junk battery (xtreme xdhd-12) that i've seen a replacement at Sears for $75. I'd like to go AGM, but this style battery has a goofy flag style terminal. Does anyone know of an AGM that will fit?

Try Spyke. I'm drawing a blank, but I believe they have one. (Get out the pesos, tho)There was a guy on EBAY about a month ago (haven't looked lately) who had gel batts for panheads and customs, that would fit in the oil tank cavity, and I am sure he had the big ones for shovels also, but please don't quote me on that particular fact. If I come acrossed it, will attach the link to this thread. Keep us posted if you find one, THANX Gumby

Go to an auto parts store. NAPA has a gel cell, I don't recommend their's, Checker has 1 also. I have had good luck with the Checker gel and had 2 NAPA's go bad under warrenty.

ive been using interstate wet cells in my 78 fxe for a long time. the one installed now has been in there at least 5 yrs, and only paid 37.00 for it off the truck. tryed die hards from sears years ago and they sucked, 2 - 3 years max. as long as your stator and reg. are in good shape, and you check batt. fluids regularly, batt. should last awhile....my.02

I almost hate to admit it but I get my batteries at Wal-mart. Cheap and they sell so many of 'em that they're always fresh. And that seems to make the most difference. Batteries, new or old, don't like sitting around.

I'll admit that I know nearly nothing about shovels, except that, if I was to build my dream bike, this is what it would look like. Is there any "need to knows"?
Thanks

find you an old timer that speaks shovel, and listen....there not hard to work on, might take some time to get to know 'er. had my 78 for 24+ years, have rebuilt or replaced almost everything, ' cept the frame. after 300,000 ( total mi. on bike..i'm guessing) i've done two complete motor rebuilds and one tranny. countless tires, brake shoes, etc. as it sits now, is how it's gonna stay forever. finally got it how i want it! 60 over on original jugs, belt in the primary, mild cam, electronic ign. 'O' ring chain, powder coated frame. torn down completly and rebult from the ground up. new seals, berings all around. inspite of all that, it still feels like a 78 shovel. i don;t ride it as much as i used to, cause i broke down and bought 07 ultra (culture shock) im 54, and wanted to be able to ride more than 200 mi. at a time, about max on the 78. the wind and the bike wore me out. now i can do 80 all day ( PIPE DREAM on a shovel) on my ultra. take the superglide out just for fun now. it draws a crowd.

Ultraman, 5 yrs ago (when I was 51 ) I would have agreed with you on the 80 all day thing. But after Baker came out with the 6spd DD, the light finally came on. I use a BDL belt drive primary. But instead of running a 41-61 combo, I run a 44-61 combo. I put a 3.0 first gear in the box, (to get away from a stop) and then tweek the tranny and rear wheel to get exactly what I want. My pan chop will run down the road at 75+, less than 3000, and just keep on trukkin', well, at least until the gas runs out. And I can do 450 in a day on the hardtail, Momma can only take about 250, and she is in the hot tub. The 78 FLH is my "new" touring bike. Have it disassembled right now, and going thru the tranny (3.0 first and close third) and it has a belt drive primary, but waiting for the 44 tooth to get here. Starting with a 25 and 49 on the back, see if it will pull it. Next winter, God permitting, putting in a 93" S&S set up. I am still dumb enough to believe a shovel can be made into a drip free, long cruiser. May die trying, but, at least I'll die happy. As to the Ultra, we had an 01 with a 124" and baker 6 spd. $$$$ dictated somehting had to go, the chopper stayed. We both miss the gzrglyd. But hopefully, the pride in the shovel will be a welcome replacement. Time will tell. But I don't quit when I get one of these brainstorms, even tho I should at times.

I have an 1983 FL and I highly reccomend going withHD stuff. Its better quality and while expensive you get your moneys worth.

By the way nice looking bike. Are you gonna go back to stock or experiment?
