Default Quick ID on a 71

Be careful, there are alot of clones out there. When I bought my 71 a few years ago I found quite few superglides that people had just slapped a boat tail on and were passing them off as original night trains.

A few tips on how to ID one quickly.
The boat tail was used in 71 and early 72, if the licence plate bracket has a reflector on it, it's a 72.
71 and 72 used the same shifter linkage as the FLH, the shifter was rotated 180 degees so it could be reached from the footpeg.
On the 71 the brake pedal pased under the exhaust pipe, it's a kind of crude almost homemade looking part.

The are quite a few parts on ebay, with a little patience you can find a boat tail for $400 to $600, a perfect seat is harder to find, it may cost about the same.

The optional red, white and blue paint job was called Sparkling America and you had to shell out an extra $40.00 to get it.

The list on a black or white bike was $2190.00, optional colors were an extra $7.95 or if you ordered it in primer only, they knocked $6.00 off the list price.

There is a small club dedicated to 71's, you can find them at http://www.nitetrainclub.whsites.net/index2.html.

Lots of luck in your deal and restoring it.

I was looking at a super glide (not in the greatest shape but restorable) and the 1st 2 digits in the motor vin are 9D. Is that a 74" or 80". Thanx....

9D would be a 1200 (74") FXE superglide. The last two numbers are the year. 80's did not appear in superglides until 79 or 80 and they would have 6G prefix, 7G for a FXS 80.

That would be Birch White. And can provide additional information if you need/want it
