Default sneezing shovel

Can someone help with why a shovelhead will "sneeze"? Well that's what it sounds like. It had a Bendix now a Super E. It is a 76. I have a 77 with a Keihin that does the same thing. The 76 has a fit cold but settles out after warming but will sneeze at highway speeds occasionally. This sneeze is through the carb. The 77 is not as bad. I have had other shovels with the same sneeze. I am just curious as I have lived with it. Thanks

Jetting and intake leaks are the #1 cause for the cold symptoms you experience. There is one more factor though. The ignition. If you are running a duel fire (points or the original electronic) overlap of the firing of the cylinders will give you a "sneeze" occationally.
If you aren't running a single fire like a HI-4, I suggest you switch. It makes the motor run so much smoother, and gets rid of the overlap firing. That makes identifying jetting issues much easier.

Not sure what sneeze is. I had a problem that would come and go

on 1980 Kehein. When I replaced the rubber plug in the top of the carb

by the low idle jet it stopped.

I agree, the Dyna HI-4 Programable ignition is the answer!

That's what I did

I still run the Keihin carbs, back then everybody threw them away and put on S&S because they didn't know what to do, I always want to stay original. Go richer on the idle, mid range and main jets, you will have to play with it several times, seal the plug on top near the Idle mix screw with paint, some had vac leaks there. You can back the timing up a few degrees. If all else fails Andrews makes a #1 cam to fix the originals faults for a stock motor. At the time the factory had to meet tuff emissions and stuff was set lean and timing was advaced to burn clean. My Lowrider runs on the rich side and on a 200 mi ride last year I still got 56 mpg.
