I just picked up a set of stock exhaust pipes for my '79 FXE, the two-into-one kind that curve around the timing cone. Anybody know where I can find an original bracket (frame to muffler) or one that will work with this setup?
I checked with my HD dealer, found the part in their book, HD calls it a "support tube" but it's no longer available. I did get the part number though (65760-77A). J&P has one that looks just like the one I need, but it's listed for an FL; mine's an FX. Does anyone know if the bracket for the FL (right side) will work on the FX original 2-into-1 muffler?
Well, I found the FL bracket on Ebay, and the seller says the front 2 holes are 2 inches O.C. & the back 2 are 9 1/4 inches O.C. with the overall length of 15 1/4 inches. Unfortunately, the mounting holes on the stock 2-into-1 muffler are just 6 inches apart. I found the stock bracket for sale by surfing the web, and it's $45. I appreciate the suggestion to make the bracket out of steel bar, but I don't have the shop to do that myself. To have it made would probably cost almost as much as the stock one I found. So, I guess I'll have to buy the one at $45 unless one comes up on Ebay in the next few days. I want to get those new pipes on SOON! Thanks for everybody's help. This is a great forum!
Man, if you're ridin' a Shovel, and don't have at least a small space with a cheap vise, a propane torch, a hacksaw, and a electric drill with a couple bits, yer gonna go broke!
Well, it's a good thing that $45 isn't going to break me! Actually, I just moved into a new house and havn't had time to get my garage in order yet. Most of my stuff is still in boxes! I've been riding this shovel for over 20 years and it's still pretty much stock, so using the original muffler bracket with the original pipes seems appropriate. Thanks for everyone's help.
heh, how true that is. I've used all that stuff probably in the last two months!
