Default motor size

Hello everybody. I'm looking to see if anyone can tell me the motor size of my 79 shovelhead. I was directed here by several other people I'm new to this forum. My 79 VIN starts with a 2F but in my service manual the VIN's jump from 2E to 2G. I've had my bike for about 13 years but the top end grew legs one day and I no longer have it. If anyone can help me I'd greatly appreciate it, I've seen some good deals on bustedknuckle.com but I'd hate to buy the wrong top end. Thanks for yallls help, oh yea I'm from S. Texas

If memory serves, I believe they went to 80" in 1978 1/2. I got a '79 FL, and it's 80".

'78 1/2 was the first electronic ignition too, but it was junk, so most have either points or a newer setup now.

Oh man, you are really straining my memory. I believe there was no 80" motor until 1979. The late 78s were still 74" and I believe the first Low Riders came out then. 1979 were produced with both engines, I have one of each, a 5E (1200) and a 6E (1340). To get to the root of your question, 2F is a Low Rider 1200cc, specifically a FXS-1200. Enjoy! Great ride!

Today's Harley shops are not good places for shovel info. Most won't even considering workiing on pre-1984. Find a good Indy and work with them. They probably told you it's an 80" because the 80" came out in 1979, problem is the first half of the year was 74". When they unveiled the "Sturgis" model was the introduction of the 80" motor.

They started the 80 in 781/2. They ran the 74s till 82 in limited numbers. The easiest visible way to distinguish between the two motors is the oil pump. The 74 had a rear chain oiler adjustment screw. The 80 didn't. Harley mixed a lot of parts in those years, so there "might" be a few 80s with a rear chain oiler. If the top end is off, measure your stroke.

Man that's a tough one , 1978 1/2 through 1980 shovels where pretty much pot luck on size but most I've seen are 74's and a good number of those read 80" with the engine numbers . As the last couple of post's said they mixed and matched everything those years and the only real way to tell is measure the bore if you have a barrel and rod stroke , I've had guy's want to fight when told their 80" was really a 74" they had bought new . Very good advice about the dealers , the bike is older than most of the techs which where not covered in their schools . Look around for the old custom shops start there .
Good Luck

2F, is a FXS Low Rider 1200.
The 80" was first avail in mid 78, and only on the FLH II (Black Cherry). After that depending on the model it could be a 74" or a 80". They used 1200's thru 1980.
