Default 4 speed problems

I think I may have a better chance putting this question on the shovelhead threads. Im new to the forum but have had this 84 FXWG for 10 years now.
I just switched the rear drive to chain from the original belt. So the main shaft in the 4 speed is now the shorter chain drive main shaft. I was putting my primo clutch back on and the clutch hub is to wide to put the nut back on, there is no threads on the shaft showing. My question is there must be a clutch hub made for the shorter shaft?

The new sprocket is where the old pulley was on the main drive gear. Why change the mainshaft at all? You can't change the hub because there wouldn't be enough room for bearings. You would have to change the inner primary to make it work or leave the longer mainshaft in the tranny. Either way you have to pull the inner primary, then buy a new one (cost $$$) or reinstall the longer M/S (a pain to do, but can be done in a day).

Again, the shorter mainshaft won't work with the belt drive style inner primary and no hubs and bearings are made to fix that. I know that's not what you want to hear.

Just curious, why did you want to change to chain drive?

Thanks for the reply.
I put a primo inner primary on last year because the old primmary was in a **** state.
With that I changed to a chaindrive. I know its a step backward but Ive had belts break at the worst time before.

1. So the primo primary is the correct one for chain drive? No way a pulley would still fit? If you ordered it for your model bike, it would fit a belt drive, unless you ordered it specifically for a chain drive conversion kit. That's really all it could be unless the mainshaft is not the correct one for your project specs.

2. Unlikely, but check to make sure nothing is in the way of the tranny/primary connection...something that keeps them from tightening up together. Was the tranny loose in the frame before you tightened up the motor to primary, then primary to tranny, then tranny to frame?

3. I just thought of something...wait for it...ha ha...did the hub not slide all the way on the M/S because a key slipped out of it's slot and got in the way, based on not quite having the keyway slot inside the hub bore, actually line up with the key?

Pick one and let us know.

If there was a hub that was not as wide, there would have to be a basket that matched, and a shorter set of bearings. I don't think those exist but I could be wrong.
