Have you got forward controls etc fitted? You may be able to reverse one of the link arms to reverse the shift pattern.
Pics of your shift linkage and shifter set up would help a lot.
your info is light on what you have like years and mixed parts on the bike ----- BUT if i were to guess you have an late 70s FX type transmission, and the pin for the shift rod is up top of the shift drum / not at the bottom like a dresser would be - and the linkage is missing on the trans for mid controls ---
you will need if this is the case the correct shift selecton arm the is at 6 oclock not 12 oclock like the one you have ---- THIS is all a guess no pictures / info - johnjzjz
Your shifting lever may be on backwards which would reverse the sequence or someone may have cut the front of the heel/toe shifting lever off...the nighttrain models in 72 shifted like that but there wasn't anything different in the transmission or ratchet top...just the lever was facing toward the rider..
