Hacked, Conversions and Trailering"Harley Sidecar, Conversion Trikes and Motorcycle Pull Behind Trailering Enthusiasts"
A forum for the discussion of your sidecar, Conversion Trike or Pull Behind Motorcycle Trailer.
Please steer me to Harley owners who pull cargo and/or camper trailers. I have a 2008 Bunkhouse cargo trailer and interested in the suggested models of Harleys to pull this unit with.
I have a RG and used to pull a Harbor Freight trailer with an EX-Cargo clam shell. You can carry a lot of stuff in a trailer like that. There is no problem pulling a trailer with a Harley. I had to angle my mirrors down so I should not forget it was back there. There are a couple of things to note. #1 always get your weight more to the front of the trailer, otherwise it will tend to wag its tail like a dog. That is unsettling at highway speed. #2 Although they pull very well, they do extend braking distances, be aware and avoid panic stops. #3 be aware of curbs in parking lots, driveways, and gas stations. You do not want to catch you trailer wheel on curbs. Otherwise enjoy and ride safe!
Any HD touring model should work for you. Keep in mind the following:
1. If you plan to tow a trailer, you should only look at motorcycle models that have dual front disk brakes.
2, You'll probably need to downshift a gear or two if you ride through steep or hilly passes.
First choice would be a big twin, though any Harley can pull it. I have a friend who pulls a good size cargo trailer with an 883 Sportster, though that would not be my first choice.
I've pulled an Aspen camper all over the country with a 2000 Roadglide. For me, the best improvement for pulling the trailer was to drop the front belt pulley from 32 to 31 teeth, gives better pulling power without having to downshift as much.
I later added a sidecar to the bike, the knees and ankles just ain't what they used to be.
