It is my understanding that the slotted end goes in first, This way it collapses on the partial thread at the bottom of the tap and locks in place. I have done this with mine based on the advice from this forum and from a local machine shop. Several people on this forum also mentioned that if you screw the insert in using the slot it is possible to break one of the slot tangs which leaves you in a bit of a mess. Too date no problems installing as mentioned - Touch wood

Default stripped one of my brass inserts on my 2014 ultra

Hi guys
well i screwed up too. Just got my bike out of winter storage and thought i would install a new three pouch windshield bag. To make a long story short, i must of stripped one of the side windshield bolts. I took the outter fairing off again, and went to the local dealership and picked up their last insert.(??).
anyway, the old insert wouldn't come out so i took a 1/4 x 20 tap and ran it through. Thankfully , it worked and i got everything buttoned up again. It would have been a much more frustrating job if i hadn't read the fix here on hd forums. There's nothing i haven't found on here for any problems i have encountered. A great resource. Thanks to all who contribute.
cheers,

It’s a fairing only with a “l”.

Yep This is the way
