had same problem, screw would not tighten down to hold the windshield in place. brass insert worked loose abit yada yada. tooka pair of needle nose plyers and twisted the brass insert (since it was already losing its grip) until it came out. slapped on some jb weld and twisted it back in. holds like a champ.

Why not just put the screw part of the way back in and pull it out with pliers. That way you can fix them without having to buy any more, right
least wise I did.

If it was me, I would install the standard screw and tighten slowly to see if it twist out. I then would use epoxy to set it back in. Only tighten sightly and don't use thread lock or you will be doing it again.

I assume you have taken the windshield off. Once done I used a nut or two placed over the fairing nut/insert that was sticking out from the fairing. Then put a washer with a hole about the same size as the windshield screw but with a diameter greater than the nuts on top of the nut. Placed the windshield screw through the washer and bolt into the mounting nut and simply screwed it in. This way the winshield screw acts as a puller bringing out the offending fairing nut/insert cleanly. Once out I took a dremel and put numerous transverse slots into the fairing mounting nut/insert cutting almost or right through into the inside thread. I then put the windshield screw back into the nut/insert after coating the threads with grease to prevent any JB weld, which happened to get on the threads, from fastening the screw into the fairing nut/insert. Coated both the nut/insert and fairing hole with JB Weld (Terrific stuff) and using the screw as an anvil drove the fairing nut back in. Leave for 24 hours to cure and file away any excess JB weld. Note I understand from this site that there is now a screw in replacement. Apparently it is not expensive. If mine come out again i will replace with these.

I think the new ones have some type of barbes that when you instal them will only allow the brass piece to tighten into the plastic if you over tighten the screw.
I've got one right now that needs changing, but I'm 2 1/2 hours from the dealer, so I may try the JB weld.

Had the same thing happen with the middle one of mine, and the right side was just starting to pull out. So I pulled the middle and put it back in JB Weld and I lightly tapped the right one in and secured it with JB Weld. Now I have no more problems.

I just bought a couple of the new ones that screw in. service mgr said be careful putting them in, because they had cracked the inner fairing installing one. Parts guy told me the new screw in type are the only ones he can get. I haven't tried using them yet.
