Windshield attachment FLHT
The brass(?) ferrule that the windshield screws go into have backed out so now the shield will not stay tight. Is there a repair kit from HD to fix this or what type of adhesive would be suitable to use that would not damage the inner fairing?

Part # 16585-96 is what you need. One end is slotted, start that end in the fairing first. Don't try to do it the other way around and screw it in with a screw driver the insert will break! This is a great repair which is the way they should come from the factory.
Rideon is right but to clarify use the fairing screw to screw in the ferrule NOT a screw driver.
it will break the slot every time. also wouldn't hurt to tap the hole first.

Yes I forgot to mention that, some say to use a 3/8 flat bottom tap first, I didn't and it worked fine and the insert is very tight, not to say it wouldn't be a good idea though.
I had a problem with one of the brass ferrule on my ultra and I replaced it when switching windshields for summer riding then same one striped again. So I took the outer faring off as to expose the entire area were the ferrule plugs in. I pulled the loose one out gently as not to screw up the threads. I then dipped the ferrule in water and then using a small modeling paint brush but a dab of Gorilla Glue on the faring, I then put a screw in the ferrule as so not to get any glue on the threads and I could put pressure on the screw and push in the ferrule. I let the ferrule dry for a couple of hours then reassembled the faring. That was about two years ago and I do change the windshields about 3 time a year. Be carful of the amount of gorilla glue as it expands
Wish had found this thread first. I found the part number on another thread and made the fix but it was a learning process.
DEFINITELY do not try to glue or epoxy the old part back in--it does nothing but mess up your work area with a gooey mess that you have to clean up. Two, definitely tap the inner fairing--it's a $4.00 tap and it puts some purchase on the repair part; I probably should have put a little Loc-tite on it. Third, and this is what I did wrong the first time, insert the slotted end first because a screwdriver will definitely break it off every time.
Live and learn. Don't know why Harley didn't use the fix in the first place. OH WAIT, yes I do, then they couldn't sell the fix for more $$ even though they are not expensive.
