I'm about to install an autometer tach on my 05 night train (carbed)
I have most of info on the how- to that I got from this site.
Need one answer I've not found here or in my service manual.
Are the ignitions 1 pulse or 2 pulse? Need to set that on the tach.
My dealer is not very helpful and I'm only going to try to pry that out of them as last resort.
I'll take pics and post as much info on this all for those who need it in future.
All the Twin Cam engines are single fire ignitions (1 coil for each cylinder), If your using the diode that hooks to both coils you would have 2 pulses, if your only hooking to 1 cylinder you only have 1 pulse. I hope this helps more than it confuses.
I installed the Baron tach on my '06 and had to connect to both of the wires coming off of the coil into the ign module. What you could do is set your tach to double fire mode and take the signal from one of the positive wires coming off of your coil. On our bikes there is no tach signal wire in the harness under the tank. Your manual will tell you which wire to connect to. The power and ground connections were easy, I tacked on to my speedo power and ground wires and have had no problems thus far. Get er done.
So here's where I'm at.
I'm all wired up except for the tach leads. I'm stuck waiting on getting the pin connector from HD. Other thing Is I'm getting conflicting ideas here.
According to wiring diagrams there is no tach hook up- per say- on my CARBED 05.
Had I had a EFI you can just go right to the ECM and you're done.
From all that I've gotten from this site I can still plug leads into #3 slot at speedo and be done.
Also I have TWO leads for this Auto meter tach. In theory I can twist both together then I can go the 'pin to the plug' route at speedo and be all set.
Other ideas is to plug one tach wire to each of the leads at the coil and get same effect.
I'm just waiting on pin from HD and I'll try that first as I'm set to do that without opening up any more of the wiring harness.
As soon as it's all up and running correct I'll post how to and pics to help others in same boat.
