Default Computer Mapping/Tunning Starter Kit?

Hey all. Got the bug to get into tuning the old gal, and I haven't a clue where to start. I've heard you can download maps from HD, but that's as much as I know. Now, I'm not a rich man, so I'm looking to get into this on a budget.

Any pointers from the pros in the house?

I tried the Harley Stage One download when I had my 09 Electra Glide and couldn't see where it made any difference. On my 13 Heritage it had been tuned with the SE Pro tuner and I had a lot of decal popping. I used the Vance and Hines FP 3 and it made a world of difference. Runs strong with no decal popping. Cost $350 (sale) - $390 (retail) but worth the price.

I had my 08 Heritage Softail dyno tuned last month. It had a stage I kit which really didn't do much. The Tuner used my SE Pro tuner. The bike is a totally different bike. Much more power, incredibly smooth acceleration and no popping on decal. All tuners are probably OK. The guy tuning the bike is who you really want to be good.

That is what I like about the V&H tuner, you can load a canned tune or better yet, it bluetooths to your phone and you can set it on Auto Tune and it figures out the best tune for your bike and the way you ride. No Tech needed, I rode mine for about 250 miles on Auto Tune and then hit 'Save' and I have what I consider a Custom Tune.

Yep! I hear you..... The HD Super Tuner also has an "optimizer" function which will optimize the map on your bike which requires you to ride the bike in that mode then, download changes to the map. After you have ridden 7 or so times in varying conditions, you get a pretty decent map. You can also load canned tunes. Most tuners have that capability. The best and most foolproof option is the 3rd option, which is what I did. Take the bike and your tuner of choice to a guy who has a gas analyzer and a dyno and let him tune it. The dyno tells you how much you are gaining or losing. Unless the change is real significant, it is hard to tell from the seat of the pants. I gained a serious horsepower increase across the entire range with a peak output of 76 and change hp. It was 66 prior to the tune. so... a 10 hp increase at the peak but a much great increase in mid range. Torque went up from 73 lb ft to just under 90 lb ft. 6th gear is now usable! ;-) Engine heat has significantly reduce. Gas mileage stayed the same.

Like I was saying, all power tuners (V&H, Power Commander, HD SE Pro, etc.) are all good tools to optimize your engine performance. It really is getting to personal preference. Once you have selected a tuner, have it dyno tuned. You cannot get it much better then that.
